Missing France

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate;
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm’d
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course, untrimm’d
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
Nor shall Death brag thou wanderest in his shade
When in eternal lines to time thou growest
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

The Centrality of Lonliness in Human Existence

Loneliness and the quality of being in a state of nothingness is central to human experience. While people encounter loneliness at varying degrees and lengths, it is inherent to the process of life and death. Though one is thrown into existence, as philosophers put it, the ‘thrownness’ happens in an extreme state of loneliness. As the being grows up and functions as an adult, loneliness follows like a shadow, though rays of sunlight may warm a part of the person. This warmth is however transient and does not last for a long time.

Abandonment, estrangement, insecurity during childhood, adolescence and adulthood; disease, melancholy and death during old age seem to be central to human experience world wide. This is especially true in countries that are ravaged by wars, internal conflict and external aggression. Many have said and noted that Iran is a land where melancholy and sadness are celebrated, and rejoiced. Poets and writers from Persia have taken inspiration from the loneliness of existence, the pain of breathing and comfort that death provides, like a soothing balm.

After the revolution, Persian artists have continued to produce internationally acclaimed works of traditional art, digital art, film and music.

Ali Ettehad’s performance piece “Purdahs of Silence” captures this lonliness of existence that is pervasive not just in Iran but in much of the middle east not  through his performance which is flanked on either side by  two stunning purdahs (screen print on silk with embroidery).

Seulement Une Moment

Crew Mate A: oh well – it was fun while it lasted

Moi: LOL, you mean a night? That would officially be my shortest relationship. Not only was it not a year, not a few months or even a few weeks which seems to be the standard among those of us who are loose in the loafers. No “A”, it was a night. So short I am hesitant to even use the term night.
God, that’s Sex and the City for ya.

Ranting and Chatting, It’s a Good Thing

I sit at the edge of my memories
and I wonder if I own them

or if they belong to the wind
if they pass from moment to moment
touching other souls as if a soft breeze

as proof of my existence
of my mistakes
of my triumphs
keeping a light, loose string touching
all that I’ve seen, been, tasted, hated and loved.
